We are overwhelmed with entertainment choices these days.
Thousands upon thousands of different mediums are screaming for attention 24/7, just hoping to catch a bit of our time so that they can make as much money as they possibly can.
With so many people working dull jobs that fry their minds and souls, and very few, if any, people getting any real education on how to live a meaningful life, the attention economy has found a captivated audience who wants nothing more than to be distracted at every moment.
It’s human nature to look for the easy way out. Eat that junk food, sit on the couch all day, ignore your problems, medicate yourself with entertainment.
So what can we do about it?
Well, we can rage against the monolith that is the internet and television, and all the associated idiocies online(which I am happy to do), but the more positive path would be to focus on getting people to shift that need for distraction to more positive entertainment.
You want to sit down for hours and watch tv? Fine. We will at least make it that what’s on tv isn’t complete garbage.
The biggest push that needs to happen now is to get people to want better quality entertainment. Tv shows, movies, games, animation, books, every medium needs to get it’s act together and make art that shifts perspective, teaches us, makes us better.
It doesn’t mean every piece of art needs to be life changing, but quality should matter.
Do we need another ridiculous reality show? I don’t think so.
Could we use another anime of the same quality as hunter x hunter or another author as great as Brandon Sanderson?
There are shows, films, books, and others that simply make you want to pick them right back up after finishing because the quality is incredible. The stories, the character development, the lessons learned, can inspire us, make us better human beings, and teach us how to approach challenging situations.
Watching another episode of the kardashians will not.
Watching Sharknado will most definitely not.
Reading another gossip magazine on the private lives of celebrities will not.
Quality matters, because every moment we spend taking in the information from these sources changes us, molds us, and considering that kids are the primary watchers of much of this entertainment, we are shaping the next generation with a swath of garbage, and it’s going to come back to bite us in the ass.
Time to wake up and make our votes with what we choose to give attention to.
Put the shit out of business, elevate quality.
Stay healthy, stay geeky folks.
